How To Play Texas Hold'em

Texas Hold'em is a community board-based game played with up to 10 players on a table. Players are dealt two cards each face down. These are their "hole cards" and can be used with any of the five "community" cards shared by the players to form the best five-card poker hand.

At "showdown", the best hand scoops the pot. If hands are tied, or the players at showdown share the five community cards as their best five-card hand, the pot is split.

Before the action, enforced bets called "blinds" are paid in by the two players to the left of the dealer. These are called the "small blind" and the "big blind", which is double the small blind.

Here's a typical Texas Hold'em hand:

9 Players

Blinds: 25/50

Action: At the beginning of a Texas Hold'em game, the small and big blinds pay their enforced bets, and the cards are dealt out. After a round of betting, where players can call the previous bet, raise to a higher bet, or fold (get rid) of their hand, three community cards are dealt out. This is called "the flop".

After The Flop: A second round of betting takes place, starting with the player in the small blind. Players continue to call, raise or fold, and once the betting is over, a fourth "turn" card is added to the community board.

After The Turn: The process starts again, and a fifth "river" card is dealt out to complete the board.

After the river: A final round of betting takes place. Any players left in at showdown reveal their cards, or losing players have the option to "muck" their hand (discard it without showing and lose the pot).

Hold'em Hand Rankings

In a standard game of Texas Hold'em, the showdown hands are ranked in order, with a Royal Flush the best hand:

  • Royal Flush (e.g. 10-J-Q-K-A of same suit)
  • Straight Flush (e.g. 2-3-4-5-6 of same suit)
  • Four Of A Kind (e.g. K-K-K-K)
  • Full House (e.g. 2-2-J-J-J)
  • Flush (e.g. 3-5-7-J-Q of same suit)
  • Straight (e.g. 4-5-6-7-8 different suits)
  • Three Of a Kind (e.g. 2-4-Q-Q-Q)
  • Two Pair (e.g. A-7-7-8-8)
  • One Pair (e.g. A-A-6-5-3)
  • High Card (e.g. A-K-5-4-2)

Good Hold'em Starting Hands

Sensible hand selection is an important part of learning Hold'em basics. By folding the majority of your hands you'll avoid problems post-flop when you fail to connect with the board.

If you're starting out, consider folding everything other than high pairs and big suited connectors. A good hand range would look like this:

  • A-A
  • K-K
  • Q-Q
  • J-J
  • 10-10
  • 9-9
  • A-K suited
  • A-K offsuit
  • A-Q suited
  • A-J suited
  • K-Q suited

The Importance Of Position In Hold'em

The strength of your hand also depends on where you're sitting at the table. If you're in late position, e.g. around seat 9 or 10, and the action has folded round to you, you may want to raise with a more marginal hand to scoop the pot there and then.

In late position, you have a lot of information already. You will have seen someone raise aggressively from the early position which could show strength. That will help inform your decision to make a call or fold.

In late position, you can open up your range of starting hands, so you might include things like 8-8, 9-9 or K-J if there has only been one caller or raiser. In early position (e.g. small/big blind, under-the-gun) you will have to be more selective as the action will be on you first after the flop, turn and river.

Popular Hold'em Variants Online

Texas Hold'em is hugely popular online, mostly in No Limit format. No Limit means there are no restrictions on the size of the raises. If you have chips in front of you, you can move "all-in" for all your stack. It doesn't matter if you can't match the previous player's bet, either. As long as you have chips you can scoop a portion of the pot in front of you.

Here are some popular Hold'em variants available in 2024:

No Limit: There are no maximum limits to your raises. If the blinds are 50/100, and you have 1 million chips, you can bet all one million if you want.

Pot Limit: In Pot Limit, the maximum raise at any time is the amount of the pot once you've called. Let's say a player has bet $40 into a pot of $100. To raise, you would have to make the call ($40), then raise the amount of the pot including your call ($40+$40+$100 = $180). Pot Limit is played in tournament or cash game format.

Limit: Limit works slightly differently, in that there are two betting limits during a hand. A lower betting limit is used in the pre-flop and post-flop rounds, with the upper betting limit used for the turn and river. For example, in a game of $2/4 Limit Hold'em, players would be able to raise by $2 pre-flop or after the flop. For a raise on the turn and river, you would have to raise in $4 increments.
